Helsinki Card

Helsinki Card questions & answers

Answers to the most common questions about the Helsinki Card, organised by topic. Note: when you buy through this site you receive a voucher that you exchange for the physical card on arrival in Helsinki.

Purchase & Price

Where and how do I receive my card after purchase?+

After purchase you receive a confirmation email with a voucher as proof. Exchange it for the physical Helsinki Card at an official collection point, for example at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport or in the city centre. The digital Helsinki Card is sent directly by email and shown on your smartphone - no collection required.

Note: the digital card does not include public transport.

Are there discounts for children?+

Children's cards are available at a reduced price. Children aged 7 to 16 receive a discounted Helsinki Card (CITY or REGION). Children under 7 generally do not need a card: they enter free or at a strong discount at most attractions and travel free on public transport when accompanied by an adult.

See all options on the Prices page.

How much does the Helsinki Card cost and is it worth it?+

The current price for your chosen duration (24, 48 or 72 hours) and version (CITY or REGION) is always shown in the booking widget. Visitors who combine Suomenlinna, one or two museums and a city tour - plus buses, trams and the metro - quickly exceed the card price with individual tickets.

More on the Prices page.

Validity & Use

How do I activate my card and how long is it valid?+

The Helsinki Card is valid for 24, 48 or 72 hours, depending on the version you choose. It activates the first time you use it, whether at an attraction or on public transport.

From first use the time runs in exact hours: a 48-hour card activated on Wednesday at 14:00 is valid until Friday at 14:00. The hours are consecutive and cannot be paused.

Can I visit attractions more than once?+

Each included attraction can be visited once for free. Further free admission to the same place is not possible with the card.

The hop-on/hop-off bus and other included tours can be used as often as you like during the validity period. Discounts can be claimed again on every visit.

Can I give my card to someone else?+

The Helsinki Card is personal and may only be used by the person it was issued to. Passing it on or sharing is not permitted under the terms of use.

Each traveller therefore needs their own Helsinki Card.

Is there priority admission at attractions?+

No. The Helsinki Card does not offer general priority or fast-track access. You queue at attractions as normal and show your card at the entrance or ticket desk. You save time because no on-site ticket purchase is needed.

Public Transport

Which public transport can I use?+

With the CITY or REGION version you use public transport without limits: buses, trams, the metro, local trains and the Suomenlinna ferry.

The CITY version covers the inner-city zones AB; the REGION version also covers the surrounding area (zones ABC, including trips to and from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport). The digital-only Helsinki Card does not include public transport. More on the Public Transport page.

Does the card work as a public transport ticket?+

Yes. The Helsinki Card CITY or REGION acts as a valid ticket in the HSL public transport network. When boarding a bus, tram or train, hold the card against the card reader until a beep and green light confirm it has been registered.

No separate ticket is needed in the covered zones. Tap your card at the start of every journey - otherwise the journey is treated as unvalidated.

Is the card valid for travel from the airport?+

Only the REGION version covers zones ABC and is therefore valid on the route between Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and the city centre (I and P trains, approximately 30 minutes). The CITY version (zones AB) does not cover this route.

Details on the Public Transport page.

Attractions & Inclusions

What is included in the Helsinki Card?+

The Helsinki Card gives you free admission to more than 30 of Helsinki's most popular sights and museums - from Suomenlinna and the Ateneum to the Design Museum. Also included are city sightseeing tours: the hop-on/hop-off bus in summer, a panoramic city bus tour in winter, plus boat cruises and discounts at restaurants, shops and on activities.

With the CITY or REGION version you also travel on public transport without limits. See all included places on the Attractions page.

Are all attractions available year-round?+

Which attractions are included can vary by season. City tours change throughout the year: the hop-on/hop-off double-decker bus runs mainly from May to September, the guided panoramic bus tour mainly from October to April.

Check the current selection in the booking widget; confirm opening hours and availability directly with the relevant venue.

Cancellation & Other

Can I cancel or return the card?+

Unactivated Helsinki Cards can be cancelled within the stated period via the booking channel, provided they have not yet been activated or collected.

Important: once the card has been activated or handed over, no refund is possible. The cancellation conditions on your voucher apply.

What happens if I lose my card?+

In the event of loss or theft there is no right to a replacement. Lost or stolen cards are neither replaced nor refunded, so treat the card carefully - like cash.

If an unused physical card is lost, contact the provider immediately, but a refund is not guaranteed.
