Public Transport
Use Helsinki's public transport with the Helsinki Card - just tap and travel.

1. The Helsinki Card as a public transport ticket
During its validity period, the Helsinki Card serves as a ticket for public transport and is available in two versions: City (zones AB, without the airport) and Region (zones ABC, incl. the airport). This lets you use all forms of transport (bus, tram, metro, commuter train and the ferry to Suomenlinna) without limits - for 24, 48 or 72 hours from first use. The digital Helsinki Card does not include public transport - only the plastic card counts as a ticket. Digital pass holders can use the hop-on/hop-off buses for free in summer.
2. Practical use
- Activation: The card activates automatically the first time you use it and is then valid for 24 h, 48 h or 72 h.
- Boarding & validating: When boarding, hold the card against the orange card reader (in the vehicle or on the platform). A beep and a green light confirm registration. Important: Tap the card again on every journey so that it is recorded as valid.
- Inspections: Ticket inspections do take place in Helsinki - simply show your Helsinki Card when asked. Without validating beforehand, the journey counts as invalid - and you risk a fine of €80.
3. Timetable and public transport app
Most lines run roughly from 05:30 until midnight. After that, night buses (marked with an N) take over from around 01:00-04:00. On weekend nights, buses run all night long.
The HSL app is helpful for planning (for Android and iOS). The app offers route planning, live departure times and service alerts. Buying tickets is also possible. The app is also available in English.
4. Key lines and connections
- Airport/Central Station: The commuter rail lines I and P connect Helsinki-Vantaa Airport with the Central Station (approx. 30 minutes). The Central Station is the main transport hub for train, tram, bus and metro connections.
- Sights: Almost all attractions can be reached by tram or bus (e.g. the cathedral on Senate Square or the Rock Church). The ring trams 2 and 3 cover all the inner-city highlights.
- Suomenlinna ferry: The ferry to Suomenlinna is free with the Helsinki Card; it departs from the Market Square and takes about 15 minutes.
5. Useful tips for Helsinki Card holders
- Accessibility: Helsinki's public transport is largely step-free (mostly low-floor vehicles and lifts at metro stations). Staff and locals are happy to help if needed.
